A Togatta-style kokeshi doll created by Yaeko Saito (斎藤八重子, 1922–2014)—a rare and notable female kokeshi artisan from the renowned Saito family of Miyagi Prefecture. The doll features a classic Togatta form with a slender cylindrical body and a gently curved shoulder line. Two red bands wrap the base and center of the torso, creating a clean and elegant design.

The face is delicately painted with an expressive, warm smile and wide eyes that curve upward, evoking a joyful and gentle demeanor. The doll's head is adorned with a stylized black topknot flanked by striking red brushstrokes that resemble floral petals, a traditional motif of the Togatta lineage.

Yaeko Saito was the wife of Kichinosuke Saito, a respected kokeshi maker in his own right. She began making kokeshi around 1955 and was among the very few women to actively produce traditional-style dolls during her time. While she remained somewhat in the background compared to her husband, her dolls are recognized for their warmth, femininity, and refined simplicity. Her work continues the legacy of the Saito family, one of the most important lineages in the Togatta style.

This particular piece, with its modest form and welcoming expression, reflects both the artistry of the Togatta tradition and Yaeko Saito’s uniquely tender aesthetic. It is a delightful collector’s piece and a testament to her quiet but enduring influence. Size: 4 x 4 x 12cm
