K05056 - Omiyage Kokeshi from Atagawa 熱川
This vintage omiyage kokeshi doll comes from Atagawa 熱川, a coastal hot spring resort area located in Higashi-Izu, Shizuoka Prefecture. With its rustic wood finish and hand-painted winter scenery, the doll beautifully captures the seasonal atmosphere often associated with the region’s mountainous backdrop.
The kokeshi wears a broad conical hat (sugegasa) and a white tenugui headscarf, a local villager braving the winter elements. Its body is adorned with a hand-painted snow-covered pine tree and torii gate, evoking the peaceful beauty of a Shinto shrine in winter. The back of the doll’s head and body feature delicate brushwork and calligraphy, enhancing its artistic quality.
Atagawa is known for its seaside hot springs and scenic coastline, but also for nostalgic Japanese omiyage (souvenir) crafts like this kokeshi, which serve as reminders of simpler times and enduring tradition. This piece is a wonderful example of mid-20th-century regional kokeshi, blending folk charm with painterly expression.
