A Japanese straw doll (藁製 わら人形) using natural straw and woven plant fibres, reflecting the rustic beauty of traditional Japanese folk craftsmanship.

This delightful figurine features a cylindrical body made from tightly woven straw, with a simple embroidered face, small black eyes, and a bright red triangular nose. Its most distinctive feature is the tall, deep indigo-coloured hairstyle, carefully arranged from dyed plant fibres to create a striking silhouette.

The figure is further decorated with crossed straw bands, a colourful woven belt in earthy green and blue tones, and dark patterned fabric sleeves. A beautifully braided pale green border completes the base, highlighting the attention to detail in its construction.

Straw craftsmanship, known as Warazaiku (藁細工), has a long history in rural Japan, where rice straw was traditionally used to create everyday household objects, ceremonial decorations, and folk toys.

Japanese straw dolls often reflect regional customs, traditional clothing, and the resourcefulness of agricultural communities. Their simple forms and natural materials embody the warmth and charm of Mingei (民芸), the Japanese folk craft tradition that celebrates beauty in handmade everyday objects.
