FT546 - Rabbit zodiac figurine by Yakushigama 薬師窯
This delightful Rabbit (卯 / U) zodiac figurine was created by Yakushigama (薬師窯), one of Japan’s most beloved ceramic workshops, known for its auspicious zodiac ornaments and folk-inspired designs. Crafted in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, one of Japan’s historic pottery centres, Yakushigama continues a ceramic tradition that stretches back more than a thousand years.
The piece depicts a gentle white rabbit seated atop a richly decorated golden lucky pouch (福袋 / fukubukuro). The bag is painted with the character 福, meaning “good fortune” or “blessing,” together with auspicious motifs including pine and plum blossoms. The combination of gold, red, white and green gives the ornament a festive appearance traditionally associated with prosperity and celebration.
The rabbit itself is softly modelled with a calm expression, pink inner ears and subtle gold accents. In the Japanese zodiac, the rabbit is associated with gentleness, grace, fertility, good fortune and forward progress. Because rabbits leap energetically ahead, they are also regarded as symbols of advancement and positive development.
The fukubukuro motif further strengthens the lucky symbolism of the piece. Traditionally meaning a “bag of fortune,” it suggests abundance, blessings and prosperity gathered together in one place. Combined with the character 福 and seasonal auspicious decoration, this makes the ornament especially suitable for New Year display and as a good-luck gift.
