This Kubi Ningyō (首人形), or "Head Doll," is a charming example of Japanese folk craftsmanship. Featuring three delicately hand-painted heads mounted on slender wooden stems and arranged in a rustic straw holder, the display is accompanied by a pair of miniature Kadomatsu (門松) decorations, creating a festive scene that celebrates the Japanese New Year.

Kubi Ningyō have long been enjoyed as regional folk crafts, admired for their expressive yet minimalist faces. Their simple forms embody the warmth and sincerity characteristic of Japan's handcrafted toys, while each painted expression possesses its own gentle personality. The central figure wears an elaborate traditional hairstyle adorned with ornamental hairpins, flanked by two serene companions, evoking the elegance of classical Japanese beauty.

The accompanying Kadomatsu, made from stylized bamboo, pine branches, and seasonal floral accents, are among Japan's most important New Year decorations. Traditionally placed at the entrance of homes, Kadomatsu welcome the Toshigami (Year Deity).

The rustic straw base further reflects the close relationship between Japanese folk art and everyday rural life, where natural materials such as straw, bamboo, and wood have been transformed into objects of both beauty and symbolic meaning.
