This delightful pair of papier-mâché zodiac roosters (酉) embodies the warmth and charm of Japanese folk craft traditions. Hand-painted in bright colors and displayed on a red felt mat, the two roosters face one another in a scene of harmony, prosperity, and celebration.

Miharu Hariko (三春張子) originating in Miharu, Fukushima Prefecture, Miharu Hariko developed during the Edo period and became renowned for its expressive hand-molded forms, vibrant colors, and auspicious motifs. Traditional subjects include zodiac animals, lucky dolls, and symbols of protection and prosperity, all crafted using layers of handmade paper over molds and finished with hand-painted details.

This pair is titled “Otakara-dori” (お宝酉, Treasure Roosters). In Japanese folklore, the rooster is closely associated with abundance and fortune. Ancient legends connect sacred roosters with the shrines of Ise, where their crowing was believed to herald light, renewal, and divine blessings. As the zodiac animal 酉, the rooster also symbolizes the successful completion of the agricultural cycle and the gathering of rewards after a season of hard work.

The name “Treasure Roosters” reflects the belief that the rooster possesses the power to attract good fortune, gather wealth, and bring prosperity into the home. The pair's cheerful expressions, bold red combs, and elegantly painted plumage perfectly capture the optimistic spirit of Japanese New Year decorations.
