FT435 - Woodcarving figurine from Kasuga Taisha 春日大社

This Year of the Sheep (未) zodiac figurine is a finely crafted example of Itto-bori (一刀彫), a traditional Japanese woodcarving technique characterized by bold, confident cuts made with a single blade. Originating in Nara, this style is closely associated with sacred objects and devotional craftsmanship.

Carved from natural wood, the sheep displays a warm, organic grain that enhances its rustic yet refined presence. The form is delightfully stylized—compact and sturdy, with gently faceted surfaces that catch the light and reveal the marks of the carver’s hand. Its softly rounded body contrasts with the more angular, expressive detailing of the face and fleece, while the silver-accented horns add a subtle decorative highlight.

This piece comes from Kasuga Taisha (春日大社), one of Nara’s most revered Shinto shrines, with a history spanning over 1,200 years. According to the included leaflet, these Eto Itto-bori figures are inspired by ritual offerings and decorative elements used in shrine ceremonies, and are imbued with prayers for household safety, prosperity, and good fortune in the New Year.

Housed in its original wooden box, inscribed with the zodiac character 未 and era markings, this figurine carries both cultural and spiritual significance. In the Japanese zodiac, the sheep symbolizes peace, harmony, and gentle perseverance—qualities that make this piece not only a beautiful decorative object but also a meaningful talisman.
