This Kyoto Fushimi Ningyō (伏見人形) figure depicts the legendary scene of “Sanjō Kokaji” (三条小鍛冶)—a beloved story rooted in Japanese folklore, craftsmanship, and divine intervention.

Hand-molded and painted in the warm, expressive style characteristic of Fushimi dolls, the piece portrays the swordsmith Sanjō Kokaji Munechika seated beside his anvil, his face showing a mixture of concentration and concern. Behind him stands a mysterious companion in the form of a fox—an embodiment of the deity Inari, who has come to assist. The fox, dressed in human-like robes and raising a hammer, captures the moment of divine aid, where human skill and supernatural power unite.

The scene recalls the famous tale in which Emperor Ichijō, guided by a dream, commands Munechika to forge a sacred sword. Lacking a hammering partner, the smith prays to Inari for help. In response, the deity appears in disguise and joins him at the forge. Together, they complete the blade, inscribing it with the names of both man and spirit—an enduring symbol of harmony between the earthly and the divine.

Rendered with simple yet vivid colors—deep reds, greens, and soft whites—the doll reflects the folk aesthetic of Fushimi ware, where narrative, symbolism, and approachability are valued over realism. The slightly exaggerated expressions and compact composition give the piece a storytelling quality, as if capturing a moment from a living legend.

This figure is not only a decorative object but also a cultural narrative in miniature, embodying themes of devotion, divine assistance, and the sacred nature of craftsmanship. It also subtly recalls the origin of the Japanese expression “aizuchi o utsu”—to strike in rhythm or agreement—derived from the synchronized hammering of swordsmiths working together.
