This Ittō-bori 一刀彫 wooden carving omiyage from Hakuba Happo-One 白馬八方尾根 captures the rustic warmth and simplicity of alpine folk craft.

Carved from a single block of wood using the traditional ittō-bori (“one-knife carving”) technique, the figure is defined by its clean, angular form and minimal yet expressive detailing. The triangular silhouette, resembling a hooded cloak, evokes a small child bundled against the cold, while its tiny dot eyes and understated features give it a gentle, almost shy presence. A simple hand-painted floral motif adds a soft, human touch to the otherwise raw wooden surface.

The figure can be understood as a representation of a yukinko (雪ん子)—a “snow child” from northern Japanese folklore, often depicted as a child of the snow spirit (yuki-onna). Such figures symbolize winter innocence, quiet endurance, and the intimate relationship between people and the harsh yet beautiful snowy landscapes of regions like Nagano. The hooded form seen here closely echoes traditional imagery of children wrapped against deep winter snow.

Mounted on a base inscribed 白馬八方尾根, the piece anchors its origin in this famous alpine area, known for heavy snowfall and scenic mountain views. The visible knife marks and natural wood grain further enhance its handmade, tactile quality.

Size: 7 x 4 x 6cm
