This delightful kōgō (香盒) is shaped as a sacred horse (神馬, shinme), a revered figure in Shinto tradition, and originates from Kiyoshikōjin Seichō-ji (清荒神清澄寺). The piece is rendered in a charming folk style, with a white horse adorned in vibrant ceremonial trappings of red, purple, green, and gold.

The shinme is considered a divine messenger, believed to carry prayers to the gods. Horses have long been associated with shrines and temples, symbolizing protection, sincerity, and the connection between the human and spiritual realms. This makes the motif especially meaningful as both a devotional object and a tea utensil.

The lively hand-painted details and slightly textured surface reflect the warmth of traditional temple crafts, giving the piece a sense of character and authenticity. Opening at the center, the kōgō reveals a simple interior for holding incense, combining symbolic significance with practical use in the tea ceremony.

A unique piece tied to a historic temple, this kōgō embodies a blend of folk artistry, spiritual heritage, and cultural tradition, making it a distinctive addition to any collection.
