FT372 - Folk Craft Raichō ittō-bori 一刀彫
This finely carved ittō-bori 一刀彫 raichō, rock ptarmigan 雷鳥 is a charming folk sculpture originating from Iwatake Ski Resort 岩岳スキー場 in Nagano Prefecture.
Carved from a single block of wood in the traditional ittō-bori style—literally “one-knife carving”—the piece highlights the natural grain and warmth of the timber. The bird stands alert upon a geometric wooden base, its body shaped with confident, faceted cuts that emphasize texture and movement. Carefully incised feather patterns across the wings and breast create depth and rhythm, while subtle detailing around the eyes—touched with hints of red and dark pigment—brings the figure to life.
The rock ptarmigan is a symbolic bird of the Japanese Alps and is designated as a Special Natural Monument of Japan. Closely associated with the high mountains of Nagano, including the Northern Alps, it represents resilience, purity, and harmony with harsh alpine environments. As a regional emblem, the raichō is often crafted as a souvenir in mountain communities, especially in areas connected to alpine tourism such as Iwatake.
Combining natural material, traditional carving technique, and strong regional identity, it serves as both a decorative sculpture and a tribute to the beloved alpine bird of Shinshu.
