FT363 - Horse Folk Craft Yoshitsune-goma 義経駒
This vintage Yoshitsune-goma 義経駒 is a traditional folk craft from Iwate Prefecture (岩手県), inspired by the legendary warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune (源義経) and the northern regions where his dramatic life story is deeply rooted in local lore.
Carved from wood in a compact, stylized form, the horse features a bold, upright posture and simplified geometric lines typical of Tōhoku folk carving. Its body is painted in strong contrasting colors—black as the base with accents of green, yellow, red, and white—creating a lively decorative rhythm. The saddle area is highlighted with metallic paper, and dotted white motifs outline the form, adding to its playful yet heroic character. A small bell hangs at the chest, while bristle-like fibers form the mane and tail, giving texture and movement to the figure.
The Yoshitsune-goma commemorates the beloved 12th-century general Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who, according to tradition, fled to the north and is closely associated with the Hiraizumi area of Iwate. Horses symbolize speed, bravery, and martial spirit, qualities strongly connected to Yoshitsune’s legendary exploits. As a folk toy and decorative talisman, the piece represents courage, perseverance, and noble spirit.
