FT298 - Sheep Shofuku Eto Heian Manjudō 平安萬珠堂
This elegant ceramic sculpture of a reclining sheep was crafted by Heian Manjudō (平安萬珠堂), a Kyoto-based workshop known for its refined zodiac and seasonal figurines rooted in Japanese tradition. The piece is signed by the artist Ken (謙), whose brush signature appears on the accompanying wooden tomobako (box), affirming its authenticity and provenance.
Delicately modeled in a serene, resting posture, the sheep is finished in a soft white glaze that accentuates the gentle folds and curves of its form. The choice of a pure white palette lends the figure a sense of calmness and purity, making it suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
In the Japanese zodiac (Eto / 干支), the sheep (未 / hitsuji) is associated with peace, harmony, and sincerity, often representing a gentle, nurturing spirit. Figures like this are commonly displayed during the New Year or given as symbolic gifts to celebrate those born in the Year of the Sheep.
The wooden box features handwritten calligraphy and a red seal, further enhancing the piece’s value as a collectible item from a respected Kyoto kiln. With its combination of symbolic meaning, sculptural elegance, and regional craftsmanship, this work is both a contemplative decorative piece and a meaningful cultural artifact.
