This ceramic dog figurine is a Shōfuku Eto (招福干支) representing the Year of the Dog (戌年), produced by the Mihama-gama (御浜窯) kiln in Nanki (南紀), a region in Wakayama Prefecture. It was made by Nichiei Co., Ltd. (ニチエー株式会社), known for their dedication to traditional craftsmanship and local culture.

Rendered in a soothing blue-green celadon glaze, the dog stands with a gentle, watchful posture and a slightly raised head, symbolizing loyalty, protection, and vigilance. The robust and rounded form conveys a sense of security and warmth, making it a fitting guardian for the household.

In Japanese tradition, dogs (inu) are considered auspicious animals, believed to ward off evil spirits and bring safety to the home. As mentioned in the accompanying leaflet, this piece draws inspiration from the faithful guardian dogs enshrined at Ōmine Nanataki Yakushi-ji (大峰山七宝滝寺) in Wakayama, a sacred site associated with healing and protection. The sound of a dog’s bark has long been believed to drive away misfortune, making this figurine especially meaningful as a talisman for health and peace.
