FT220 - Boar Pig Shōfuku Eto figurine by Shōhō 昭峰
This Shōfuku Eto (招福干支) figurine set, crafted by 昭峰 (Shōhō), represents the wild boar (inoshishi), one of the twelve animals of the Japanese zodiac (eto 干支). The set features a pair of boars — a larger white boar and a smaller red one — each hand-painted with auspicious motifs of plum blossoms and decorative saddles in bright vermilion and white.
The boars are placed on a traditional black display stand, accompanied by a miniature gold folding screen (byōbu) adorned with elegant pine, bamboo, and plum designs — classic symbols of prosperity, perseverance, and good fortune in Japanese culture. A small wooden plaque inscribed with 「開運 千支」 (kaiun senshi, “Zodiac Fortune”) adds an extra touch of authenticity and tradition.
The original box, decorated with green bamboo patterns, includes inscriptions confirming its identity as a work of 昭峰, a recognized artisan of traditional Japanese folk crafts. These figures are not only decorative but also carry cultural significance as protective charms and lucky talismans, particularly for those born in the Year of the Boar.
With its meticulous craftsmanship, warm symbolism, and elegant presentation, this Shōfuku Eto boar figurine set embodies the spirit of good fortune and celebration associated with the Japanese New Year.
