FT199 - Japan Folk Crafts Tateyama Gourd 立山葫蘆
This vintage gourd charm, known as the “Tateyama Gourd” (立山葫蘆), is a traditional souvenir from the sacred Tateyama Mountain Range in Toyama Prefecture.
Since ancient times, Tateyama has been revered as a holy mountain. For generations, it has been a rite of passage for local boys to climb the peaks at the age of sixteen, symbolizing their coming of age. Upon reaching the summit, they would offer a gourd filled with sacred sake at the Ōyama Shrine. From this custom, the “Tateyama Gourd” was born, and it remains a symbol of Tateyama climbing culture to this day.
The gourd itself is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world and has long been considered an auspicious object. Its seeds can be preserved for many years, making it a symbol of fertility and prosperity for future generations. Because gourds float on water, they are also cherished as protective talismans against drowning, known as “unsinkable charms of the water deity.”
This particular piece is decorated with an image of Ebisu, one of Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods, who is associated with prosperity, bountiful harvests, and good fortune. He is often depicted holding a sea bream and sitting on bales of rice, as seen on this gourd, symbolizing wealth and abundance. Finished with a smooth lacquer and tied with a blue cord, the Tateyama Gourd serves as both a good-luck charm and a cultural keepsake, perfect for carrying or hanging at home to invite safety, health, and prosperity.
