A Very RARE large size of Miharu Hariko Mede Tai 三春張子 めで鯛 This vivid red papier-mâché sea bream is a traditional folk toy crafted in the town of Miharu in Fukushima Prefecture 福島県 known as Miharu Hariko, these toys are hand-made using time-honored techniques that date back over 300 years, they are often made to ward off evil, bring health, prosperity, and happiness, and are deeply connected to local beliefs and family heritage.
"Tai" (鯛, sea bream) is a play on the word "medetai" (めでたい), meaning auspicious, happy, or celebratory. Sea bream is traditionally associated with good fortune, success, and festive occasions, often served at weddings, New Year's feasts, and other milestones. Because of this pun and association, tai is considered a lucky fish in Japanese culture. Painted in bold red with white, black, and gold details, this toy captures a cheerful and lucky spirit.
