This Isuzu 五十鈴 dorei clay bell from Ise Jingū (伊勢神宮) is a beautifully understated example of sacred folk craft, shaped in the form of a gentle sheep (未)—one of the twelve zodiac animals. Molded from unglazed clay, the piece retains its natural warm earthen tone, evoking a deep connection to the soil and spiritual landscape of Ise.

The form is simple and rounded, with softly defined features: a curled horn, small ears, and a compact body that feels both playful and grounded. A discreet seal mark is impressed on the side, while a white cord emerges from the top, allowing the bell to be hung as a protective charm. The accompanying box bears calligraphy referencing the zodiac year, further linking the piece to cyclical time and traditional belief.

Named after the sacred Isuzu River (五十鈴川) that flows through the grounds of Ise Jingū, these dorei bells are imbued with a sense of purification and reverence. The gentle sound produced when the bell is moved is believed to cleanse the spirit, ward off misfortune, and invite divine protection, echoing the role of bells in Shinto ritual practice.

The sheep motif symbolizes peace, harmony, and familial well-being, qualities that resonate with the serene and sacred atmosphere of Ise. Its calm, resting posture enhances this meaning, suggesting quiet protection and enduring stability.

With its unadorned surface, subtle hand-formed irregularities, and natural materiality, the piece embodies the essence of wabi-sabi—finding beauty in simplicity, imperfection, and authenticity. There is a quiet dignity in its modest presence, reflecting both spiritual purpose and folk artistry.
