This dorei clay bell features a hand-painted depiction of Kintaikyō Bridge (錦帯橋), one of Japan’s most iconic wooden bridges. Recognizable by its graceful series of five arches spanning the Nishiki River, the bridge is rendered here in a soft, flowing sumi-e (ink painting) style, capturing both its architectural beauty and the surrounding landscape in a few expressive brushstrokes.

The bell itself is formed in a rounded, gourd-like shape and topped with a rustic straw tassel, reinforcing its connection to traditional folk craft. The monochrome ink design, with its gentle gradations and open space, evokes a sense of distance and quiet atmosphere, as if viewing the bridge through mist or memory. Alongside the image, calligraphy adds a poetic presence, linking the object to place and cultural heritage.

As with all dorei, the bell contains a small internal clapper that produces a soft, calming sound when moved. Traditionally, such bells are believed to purify the space, ward off misfortune, and invite good fortune, making them both decorative and symbolic objects.

The motif of Kintaikyō Bridge carries its own meaning. Built without nails using intricate wooden joinery, the bridge symbolizes harmony between human craftsmanship and nature, as well as balance, resilience, and connection—linking not only two riverbanks but also past and present. Combined with the quiet imperfection of the handmade form, this piece reflects the spirit of wabi-sabi, where simplicity, transience, and subtle beauty are deeply appreciated.
