CB202 - Dorei Clay Bell of Rat 子 福鈴
This is a vintage dorei clay bell in the shape of a rat (子, Ne), representing the first sign of the Japanese zodiac. Fukurin (福鈴), this figure embodies simplicity and symbolic richness. The white rat is delicately formed with soft curves and subtle features—pointed ears, red eyes, and painted whiskers—expressing a gentle, benevolent character. The white body is modestly accented with gold flecks, evoking purity and good fortune.
The rat (nezumi) in the Eto (干支) cycle symbolizes cleverness, prosperity, and fertility, as it was the first animal to arrive in the great zodiac race. It’s often associated with quick wit and abundance, and white rats are particularly seen as lucky in Japanese folklore.
A black and gold seal reads 福鈴 (Fukurin, “lucky bell”), affirming its role as a talisman meant to attract happiness and ward off misfortune. A red cord tied at the top allows it to be hung for display or used as a gentle, resonant bell in Shinto or folk rituals.
