CB190 - Horse Dorei Clay Bell of Kogane Jinja 小金神社
A dorei (clay bell) in the shape of a white horse, offered by Kogane Jinja (小金神社), a Shinto shrine located in Kogane, in the historical Owari region of present-day Aichi Prefecture. The figurine is part of a long-standing custom of gifting and collecting zodiac-themed talismans for blessings of good fortune and protection.
The horse, painted with a bright red saddle and adorned with gold accents, symbolizes forward movement, vitality, and strength. In the Japanese zodiac (eto), the horse is one of the twelve animals and is associated with energy and auspicious travel. The bell, with a purple braided cord, is meant to be hung as a charm—either in the home or carried personally—for safety, success, and fulfillment of wishes.
The accompanying explanation card discusses the historical significance of the zodiac animal and its associations with Daikokuten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods. It highlights how the figurine is specially crafted for the year of the horse, to be kept as a talisman ensuring household peace, protection from misfortune, and prosperity.
Such bells from Kogane Shrine are also considered ema-like offerings, embodying prayers for strong familial bonds, safe journeys, and flourishing business.
