CB172 - Dorei Clay Bell of Tengu 天狗

CB172 - Dorei Clay Bell of Tengu 天狗

This is a striking clay bell (土鈴 / dorei) in the form of a Tengu (天狗) — a legendary creature from Japanese folklore known for its long nose, red face, and supernatural powers. This particular bell features a bold, expressive sculpt of the Tengu's face, complete with exaggerated eyebrows, fierce golden eyes, and white facial hair, hand-painted in vivid detail.

On the back, the bell is inscribed with the word 魔除 (mayoke), meaning “protection from evil” or “warding off evil spirits.” This indicates its primary function as a talisman — used to repel bad luck, illness, or negative energies.

Tengu are traditionally seen as mountain spirits or protectors with both mischievous and protective aspects. Over time, they came to be revered as guardians of the mountains and forests, often associated with wisdom, strength, and martial prowess. Bells like this one are commonly sold at shrines or folk festivals and serve as amulets of protection, especially for homes or travelers.

This bell is not only a symbolic item but also a delightful example of Japanese folk craftsmanship, combining humor, spirit, and tradition into a small, meaningful object. The addition of the internal rattle (鈴入り) adds to its charm, letting the sound resonate as a spiritual cleanser.
