TB462 - Ryukyu Lacquerware Tray 琉球塗 お盆
A vintage Japanese Ryukyu lacquerware tray (琉球塗), featuring a vibrant vermilion-red lacquered surface framed by natural-toned wooden edges.
Ryukyu lacquerware (Ryūkyū-nuri) is a traditional craft originating from Okinawa, formerly the Ryukyu Kingdom. With a history spanning several centuries, this distinctive lacquerware tradition developed through cultural exchanges with China and mainland Japan. It is particularly admired for its rich red and black finishes, elegant simplicity, and refined craftsmanship.
The tray features a smooth, glossy vermilion surface with a minimalist rectangular design. Its warm colour and understated appearance reflect the traditional Japanese appreciation for functional beauty.
Traditionally, lacquered trays are used for serving tea, sweets, and refreshments or for presenting decorative objects. This piece can also serve as an elegant display tray for Japanese ceramics, tea utensils, or small collectibles.
The tray comes with its original presentation box, labelled 琉球塗, together with vintage Japanese informational leaflets describing the history and craftsmanship of Ryukyu lacquerware.
A charming example of Japanese vintage household craftsmanship, combining practicality with the cultural heritage of Okinawan lacquer traditions.
