A refined vintage Japanese yunomi cup from Arita Ware (有田焼), made by Buzan Kiln (文山窯) and decorated with an elegant grape motif (葡萄文) using the distinctive hotaru-de (蛍手) technique.

The most eye-catching detail is the bunch of grapes formed from small translucent circular openings. These pierced sections are filled with glaze, allowing light to pass through and creating the luminous effect known as 蛍手 (hotaru-de) — literally “firefly style.”

When held against the light, the translucent grapes glow softly, giving the motif a beautiful sense of depth and delicacy. The contrast between the deep blue leaves and the pale, luminous grape cluster makes the decoration especially elegant.

Hotaru-de is a decorative porcelain technique in which small openings are pierced into the body and then filled with translucent glaze before firing. Once fired, the filled sections allow light to pass through, producing a glowing effect reminiscent of fireflies.

Arita-yaki is one of Japan’s most celebrated porcelain traditions, produced in and around Arita, Saga Prefecture. With a history dating back to the early 17th century, Arita became renowned for its fine white porcelain, cobalt-blue painting, and technically sophisticated decorative techniques.
