A charming vintage Japanese shikishi print by Ueno Tōen (上野澄園, 1905–1999), combining traditional calligraphy with a colorful depiction of an inu hariko (犬張子) pull toy and children.
The large inscription reads 「千代の友」 (Chiyo no Tomo), a poetic expression that can be understood as “a companion for a thousand generations” or “an enduring friend.” The phrase carries warm associations of lasting bonds, longevity, and good fortune.
At the lower left, a traditional papier-mâché dog toy is shown mounted on wheels and pulled by a child, while another child sits above the figure. Inu hariko have long been associated with healthy childbirth, protection of children, and family well-being in Japan. Their cheerful form made them popular both as children’s toys and as auspicious decorative objects.
Ueno Tōen (1905–1999) was a Japanese calligrapher and painter known for works combining traditional ink painting, classical calligraphy, and auspicious imagery. Many of his compositions were reproduced as printed shikishi, making his designs widely appreciated as decorative pieces for the home and as gifts marking New Year, birthdays, longevity celebrations, and other happy occasions.
