KR02 - Kōshō Shimizu - Limited Edition Ceramic Artwork 清水公照
A ceramic relief artwork titled “Waratte Ohayō” (わらっておはよう), meaning “Smile and Good Morning,” based on an original work by Kōshō Shimizu (清水公照), a renowned Buddhist monk, calligrapher, and artist associated with Tōdai-ji Temple (東大寺) in Nara, Japan.
Kōshō Shimizu (1911–1999) served as the 207th and 208th head priest of Tōdai-ji, one of Japan's most historically significant Buddhist temples. Beyond his religious responsibilities, he was celebrated for his distinctive artistic expression, combining Zen-inspired philosophy, playful calligraphy, and a warm sense of humanity.
This piece features the uplifting Japanese phrase 「わらって おはよう」, encouraging us to greet each new day with a smile. The expressive black brushstrokes are accompanied by three vertical lines in yellow, red, and green, creating a cheerful yet minimalist composition.
The artwork is presented on a three-dimensional ceramic panel (立体美術陶板), giving the calligraphy a subtle sculptural quality. It is mounted against a soft green patterned background and enclosed in a silver-toned frame, creating a beautiful balance between traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern decorative design.
The reverse retains its original identification label, confirming the title, artist, and limited-edition production number 51 of 100.
More than a decorative artwork, this piece reflects Shimizu's philosophy of finding joy and spiritual meaning in ordinary moments. Its gentle message makes it a meaningful addition to a Japanese art collection or a thoughtful gift symbolising optimism, happiness, and new beginnings.
