K15190 - Omiyage kokeshi from Tohoku 東北
An Omiyage Kokeshi originating from the Tohoku region (東北地方) of northern Japan, featuring a beautiful auspicious cloud motif (瑞祥の雲) symbolising good fortune, happiness, and prosperity.
The most distinctive feature is the flowing auspicious cloud pattern, painted in graceful curves of turquoise, white, and gold. Small yellow decorative accents and a dark obi complete the design, creating a harmonious composition that reflects the understated beauty of Japanese folk art.
In traditional Japanese art, auspicious clouds, also known as Zuiun (瑞雲), are regarded as symbols of good fortune, prosperity, and favourable omens.
Often depicted as elegant, swirling cloud formations, these motifs have appeared throughout Japanese history in paintings, textiles, ceramics, and decorative crafts.
The flowing cloud patterns also evoke a sense of tranquillity and harmony with nature, reflecting the Japanese appreciation for symbolic beauty.
