FT605 - Hida Ittobori Wood Carving Jurōjin 寿老人
This charming wooden sculpture depicts Jurōjin (寿老人), the God of Longevity and one of Japan’s revered Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin, 七福神). Crafted in the traditional Hida Ittobori (飛騨一刀彫) woodcarving style, the figure embodies the rustic beauty and expressive craftsmanship of Japanese folk art.
Originating from the Hida region of Gifu Prefecture, Hida Ittobori is a traditional woodcarving technique celebrated for its bold, confident chisel cuts and the natural warmth of wood. Rather than relying on elaborate decoration, this style emphasizes the sculptural qualities of the material, allowing the artisan's carving marks to create texture, depth, and character.
Jurōjin is traditionally portrayed as a wise elderly man with an exceptionally elongated forehead, a flowing beard, and a staff, symbolizing wisdom, longevity, and a peaceful life. In Japanese folklore, he is associated with the blessings of long life, good health, and happiness.
This particular sculpture features Jurōjin's distinctive tall head, deeply carved facial features, long textured beard, and gently bowed posture. He holds a curved staff in one hand and a small vessel in the other. The warm reddish-brown finish enhances the natural character of the wood, while the carefully carved robes and expressive face give the figure a wonderful sense of personality.
