A charming vintage Japanese Shishi-gashira (獅子頭) hand-operated lion head, inspired by the traditional Shishimai (獅子舞 / Lion Dance) performed at festivals and New Year celebrations throughout Japan.
This small folk toy, known as 手戯 (teasobi / hand-play toy), recreates the dramatic appearance of a traditional festival lion. The head is vividly painted in red, black and gold, with expressive eyes, pointed ears and a wonderfully lively face. White feathers form the characteristic hair around the head, while a patterned fabric body extends behind it.

The articulated lower jaw can be opened and closed by hand, imitating the snapping movement of the lion during a Shishimai performance. Its handmade construction and slightly rustic finish give it the warm character associated with traditional Japanese folk toys.
In Japanese culture, the shishi is regarded as an auspicious and protective creature. During Shishimai performances, the lion traditionally dances among the crowd, and having one's head gently "bitten" by the lion is believed to drive away evil and bring good fortune and health.

A delightful piece of Japanese folk culture, perfect for collectors of m folk toys, festival objects, hariko, and traditional Japanese crafts.
Condition: Vintage condition with visible age-related wear, including rubbing and losses to the painted and gilded surfaces.

The feathers show natural wear and disarrangement from age. These traces add to the authentic character of this older folk piece. Please refer carefully to the photographs for its condition.
