A vintage Monkey Eto figurine crafted by Yakushigama (薬師窯), representing the Monkey (Saru / 申) of the traditional Japanese zodiac.

In Japanese culture, the monkey is regarded as an auspicious and protective animal. The Japanese word for monkey, saru (猿), is also associated through wordplay with the verb saru (去る), meaning “to leave” or “to go away.” For this reason, monkey motifs have traditionally carried wishes for misfortune and troubles to depart, making them meaningful protective talismans. As a zodiac animal, the monkey is also associated with cleverness, adaptability, curiosity and lively intelligence.
Crafted by Yakushigama (薬師窯) in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, one of Japan’s historic ceramic centres, this piece belongs to the long tradition of Japanese auspicious ceramic ornaments. Seto’s pottery heritage stretches back more than a thousand years, while Yakushigama is especially known for its delightful Eto zodiac figures and folk-inspired lucky charms.
