VTT186 - Tsuko-Tegata from Himi Kaidō 氷見街道
This vintage Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) is a traditional Japanese wooden travel plaque and protective amulet from with the historic Himi Kaidō (氷見街道) route and Iwai-do Onsen (磐井戸温泉).
Crafted in the classic pentagonal form inspired by ema prayer plaques, the front is boldly inscribed with 氷見街道 and 水見っ子, alongside the words 家護札 (“household protection talisman”). The warm natural wood grain, red-and-white braided cord, and small silver bell give the piece a nostalgic folk charm deeply connected to traditional Japanese travel culture.
The reverse side bears auspicious inscriptions including 安産護符 (“safe childbirth amulet”) and 愛浴び護符 (“blessing and protection charm”), reflecting the spiritual and healing associations of the hot spring region. Traditionally, the attached bell was believed to ward off misfortune and protect travelers along their journeys.
Both a travel keepsake and a folk talisman, this tsuko-tegata beautifully captures the atmosphere of old Japanese roadside pilgrimage culture and the enduring charm of regional onsen traditions.
