VTT184 - Tsuko-Tegata from Mount Fuji 富士山頂

VTT184 - Tsuko-Tegata from Mount Fuji 富士山頂

This vintage Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) is a traditional Japanese wooden travel plaque commemorating the ascent to the summit of Mount Fuji (富士山頂), Japan’s most iconic and sacred mountain.

Crafted in the classic pentagonal form reminiscent of ema prayer plaques, the front bears bold calligraphy reading 富士山頂上 (“Mount Fuji Summit”), accompanied by a red seal stamp and a small silver bell attached with a vivid red cord. The richly toned wood grain and braided purple-and-pink cord give the piece a warm, nostalgic character evocative of Showa-era mountain pilgrimages and travel souvenirs.

The reverse side carries an inscription certifying the achievement of reaching the summit:
“This travel pass certifies that the bearer has successfully climbed to the top of Mount Fuji.” A small illustration of Mount Fuji further reinforces the symbolism of the journey and accomplishment.

Traditionally, tsuko-tegata served both as commemorative keepsakes and protective charms for safe travels. The attached bell was believed to ward off misfortune while accompanying travelers on the road.

Both symbolic and collectible, this Mount Fuji summit tsuko-tegata beautifully captures the spirit of pilgrimage, endurance, and admiration for Japan’s most revered peak.
