VTT133 - Tsuko-Tegata from Tosa Province 土佐國
This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) comes from Tosa Province (土佐國) — present-day Kōchi Prefecture on the island of Shikoku — a region deeply associated with the legendary samurai Sakamoto Ryōma (坂本龍馬).
Crafted from warm-toned wood and finished with a traditional red-and-white braided cord and small protective bell, the front prominently features bold calligraphy reading 坂本龍馬. Beside the inscription is a delightful illustrated figure of Ryōma in simplified folk style, dressed in kimono and hakama, holding a small object with an earnest expression. A red banner beside him references 土佐海援隊, the maritime trading and political organization Ryōma founded during the final years of the Edo period.
Additional text includes a poetic line expressing personal dreams and aspirations, reflecting Ryōma’s enduring image as a visionary who helped pave the way for the Meiji Restoration. At the bottom, the historical dates 天保六年 – 慶応三年 (1835–1867) mark his lifespan.
The reverse side bears strong brush calligraphy reading 脱藩手形 (“domain-leaving pass”), referencing Ryōma’s dramatic decision to leave the Tosa domain without official permission — an act of defiance that shaped his path as a reformer. A red seal reading 土佐國 and 家護 reinforces the commemorative and protective nature of the piece.
Historically, a tsuko-tegata was a travel permit required to cross domain borders during the Edo period. This example cleverly ties that tradition to Ryōma’s story, transforming it into a symbolic charm of independence, ambition, and safe journeys.
