This charming Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形), or traveler’s passport plaque, is a nostalgic keepsake from Japan’s largest freshwater lake — Lake Biwa (琵琶湖) in Shiga Prefecture. Popular during the Showa era as a tourist souvenir, this wooden plaque beautifully captures the spirit of travel and local pride.

The front features a colorful hand-painted map of Lake Biwa Quasi-National Park (琵琶湖国定公園), dotted with famous local towns and landmarks such as Hikone, Otsu, and Chikubu Island. A bright orange sailboat on the shimmering water adds a lively touch, celebrating the recreational and cultural significance of the lake.

The reverse side displays bold calligraphy reading “Tsuko Tegata” and “Safety in Travel & Navigation” (交通安全・案内安全), accompanied by red seal stamps for authenticity. This item was likely used as a novelty travel pass or commemorative token, symbolizing a wish for safe passage and joyful exploration.

A red-and-white braided cord with a soft bell adds traditional flair, making it a delightful piece to hang or display.
