TC75 - Chawan Matcha Bowl of Shigaraki-yaki 信楽焼
This Shigaraki-yaki (信楽焼) chawan embodies the earthy strength and natural beauty that have defined Shigaraki ware for centuries. Crafted from the region’s distinctive coarse clay, the bowl features a warm, reddish-brown body richly textured with feldspar inclusions and natural fire marks.
The exterior displays layered bands of kiln transformation — deep iron-brown tones blending into golden ochre and ash-kissed highlights. Subtle variations in color and texture reveal the unpredictable beauty of high-temperature firing, a hallmark of traditional Shigaraki ceramics. The surface feels organic and alive, with fine granulation and natural speckling that enhance its rustic character.
The interior contrasts gently with a softer glaze pooling toward the base, creating depth and warmth that would beautifully frame vibrant green matcha. The slightly flared rim and balanced foot (kōdai) provide stability and a comfortable grip, making it both functional and aesthetically grounded.
Shigaraki ware, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns (日本六古窯), is celebrated for its wabi-sabi sensibility — appreciating imperfection, natural processes, and quiet strength. This chawan reflects that philosophy: unpretentious yet powerful, rustic yet refined, making it an ideal vessel for tea ceremony or contemplative daily use.
