TC67 - Matcha Bowl Chawan of Shino-yaki 志野焼
This Shino-yaki (志野焼) matcha bowl is a beautiful example of the rustic elegance that defines Shino ware, one of Japan’s most celebrated tea ceramics originating in the Mino region during the Momoyama period.
The bowl features a softly rounded form with a gently irregular rim, inviting a natural, hand-held comfort prized in the tea ceremony. Its surface is covered in a thick, milky-white Shino glaze, subtly translucent in places, revealing warm sandy tones beneath. Small pinholes, iron specks, and natural variations in the glaze testify to the high-temperature firing and traditional wood-firing influences characteristic of Shino-yaki.
The contrast between the creamy glaze and the coarse, earthy clay body creates a quiet depth, while the slightly rough foot adds tactile balance and visual grounding. These understated imperfections embody the wabi-sabi aesthetic—an appreciation of simplicity, impermanence, and natural beauty.
Well-suited for matcha, this chawan harmonizes tradition with warmth and individuality, making it an excellent choice for both tea practice and contemplative display.
