TC57 - Shino-yaki Matcha Bowl 志野焼 茶碗

TC57 - Shino-yaki Matcha Bowl 志野焼 茶碗

This Shino-yaki (志野焼) matcha bowl is a beautiful example of one of Japan’s most celebrated tea ceramics, admired for its gentle warmth and expressive glaze. The bowl is covered in a soft, milky-white Shino glaze with a subtle bluish hue, punctuated by natural iron spotting and faint scorch marks that emerged during firing. These organic variations give the surface a landscape-like quality, evoking mist, stone, and flowing water.

The form is quietly powerful: a slightly irregular, hand-shaped body with a rounded profile and a gently undulating rim. The thickness of the walls provides a reassuring weight in the hands, enhancing the tactile experience so valued in the tea ceremony. Beneath the glaze, hints of the coarse clay body appear, adding depth and texture and emphasizing the handmade character of the piece.

Typical of Shino ware, the glaze pools softly in places and thins at the edges, creating a lively contrast between glossy and matte areas. When filled with vibrant green matcha, the pale glaze beautifully frames the tea, heightening both its color and the contemplative mood of the moment.

Size: 13 x 13 x 7.5cm
