TC53 - Kyo-yaki Chawan Matcha Bowl 京焼

TC53 - Kyo-yaki Chawan Matcha Bowl 京焼

This vintage Kyō-yaki (京焼) matcha bowl presents a refined yet gently expressive character, reflecting the long Kyoto tradition of tea ceramics that value elegance, narrative painting, and harmony with the tea ceremony. The form is softly rounded and well-balanced, with gently rising walls that sit comfortably in the hands, conveying both practicality and quiet grace.

The surface is covered in a warm, creamy glaze marked by fine crackle (貫入), a characteristic feature admired in Kyoto wares. These delicate networks of lines give the bowl a sense of age and depth, allowing light to play subtly across the surface. Painted in understated cobalt blue (呉須), a lyrical iris floral motif unfolds around the exterior, rendered with fluid brushwork that feels spontaneous yet controlled. The blossoms and leaves appear to sway lightly, suggesting a seasonal scene rather than a rigid design, an approach closely aligned with Kyoto aesthetics.

At the bottom, the distinctive 切足 (kiri-ashi) or “cut foot” design provides a sense of lightness — as if the vessel gently floats above the surface. Beauty found in imperfection, transience, and natural irregularity.

Size: 13 x 13 x 8cm
