TC34 - Kyo-yaki Chawan Matcha Bowl Miyaji Hideka 宮地英香

This Kyō-yaki (京焼) matcha bowl is the work of Miyaji Hideka (宮地英香), a Kyoto ceramic artist known for her lighthearted, expressive designs that blend traditional motifs with a contemporary touch. The bowl features the beloved お多福 (Otafuku) face—a symbol in Japanese culture associated with good fortune, happiness, and cheerful abundance.

Crafted in a smooth, milky-white clay body typical of Kyoto ceramics, the bowl takes on a soft rounded form that accentuates the playful decoration. The interior is adorned with Otafuku’s serene smiling face, delicately painted with fine black brushwork and a hint of vermilion at the lips. Along the rim, a bold black glaze forms the silhouette of her signature hairstyle, creating a delightful contrast and giving the bowl a whimsical sculptural presence.

The exterior carries the inscription 「百福」 (hyakufuku)—literally “a hundred fortunes”—emphasizing the auspicious message of the piece. The combination of humorous charm and refined craftsmanship reflects Kyoto’s long tradition of ceramics that are not only functional but also richly expressive and culturally symbolic.

Lighthearted yet elegant, this Otafuku-themed chawan brings joy to the tea table and embodies the spirit of good luck, prosperity, and warmth that the character represents. It is a lovely example of modern Kyō-yaki that continues to honor tradition while embracing creativity.
