TC20 - Japanese Ceremonial Fukusa 帛紗
This refined Japanese Fukusa (帛紗) embodies the spirit of elegance and etiquette that has long been central to Japanese culture. Traditionally used in court ceremonies, the fukusa was draped over gifts as a symbol of respect, purity, and sincerity. Even today, it continues to play an important role in celebratory occasions such as weddings, births, housewarmings, formal visits, and seasonal greetings, where it conveys the giver’s thoughtfulness and courtesy.
This particular fukusa is crafted in a deep, regal purple silk, a color historically associated with nobility and dignity. One side features a fan-shaped motif delicately painted with cranes, a bird revered in Japan as a symbol of longevity and good fortune. The reverse side is adorned with scattered flecks of gold leaf, catching the light in a subtle, shimmering display that enhances its festive quality. Finished with green corner cords, it is presented in a wooden storage box, preserving both its beauty and formality.
Accompanied by a leaflet that explains the origin and etiquette of fukusa, this piece is not only a practical wrapping cloth but also a cultural treasure that reflects Japanese refinement. Beyond its ceremonial role, it may also be displayed as framed textile art, used as an ornamental cloth on a table or shelf, or enjoyed as a seasonal decoration during New Year celebrations, weddings, or other auspicious gatherings.
