A vintage Raku-yaki (楽焼) chawan, matcha tea bowl, with a deep, earthy glaze and the softly irregular form traditionally associated with Japanese tea ceramics.

The bowl has a low, rounded body with gently uneven walls and a subtly hand-shaped rim. Its surface is covered in a rich dark glaze blending tones of deep brown, charcoal, muted grey and reddish-black, with areas of lighter mottling and fine surface variation created during firing. The result is quiet and atmospheric, with each section of the bowl revealing slightly different tones depending on the light.

Raku ware (楽焼) developed in Kyoto in the late 16th century and became closely connected with the tea ceremony through the aesthetics of Sen no Rikyū and the early Raku potters.

Unlike many wheel-thrown ceramics, traditional Raku tea bowls are often shaped by hand, giving them a softer, more individual profile. Their appeal lies in simplicity, tactile warmth and subtle irregularity rather than perfect symmetry.

Raku chawan are particularly appreciated for the intimate experience they create in use: their compact form, rounded walls and handmade surfaces sit naturally in the hands during the preparation and drinking of matcha.
