A beautifully vintage Karatsu-yaki matcha bowl (唐津焼 茶碗) in the broad, shallow form known as a hira chawan (平茶碗). Traditionally favoured for summer tea gatherings, this open shape allows the tea to cool more quickly and gives the bowl a light, spacious presence.
The bowl is finished in a soft ivory-white glaze with subtle speckling, fine crazing and gentle tonal variation. Its surface is decorated with freely brushed Karatsu-e (唐津絵) motifs in iron-rich brown and charcoal tones. The loose, spontaneous brushwork suggests grasses of natural forms, giving the piece a quiet sense of movement without overwhelming its simple shape.
Karatsu ware originated in present-day Saga Prefecture and is one of Japan’s most celebrated ceramic traditions. Closely connected with the tea ceremony, it is admired for its earthy clay, restrained glazing and unforced decoration. Karatsu-e pieces are particularly recognised for their expressive iron-painted designs, often inspired by plants, landscapes and everyday natural forms.
The gently flared sides, darkened rim and modest foot create a balanced profile that feels both rustic and refined. The interior remains largely undecorated, allowing the colour of prepared matcha to stand out beautifully against the pale glaze.
