This is a vintage cast iron ashtray crafted as a souvenir from Nagasaki, Japan, inspired by the Fukuji-ji Daikane (福寿寺の大釜) — the Great Cauldron of Fukuju-ji Temple, a designated National Treasure.

The ashtray is modeled after the iconic red iron lid of the famous cauldron, featuring bold golden characters that read 福寿寺の釜 ("The Cauldron of Fukuju-ji") and 長崎 ("Nagasaki") on the rim. The lid is removable, revealing a hollow bowl designed to function as an ashtray, with carved rests for holding cigarettes.

Fukuju-ji Temple, located near the historic Akabane Gate in Nagasaki, was established in the early Edo period and became known for its magnificent bronze statues and cast iron works. The original giant cauldron was used during times of famine to cook large amounts of porridge to feed the local population, serving as a symbol of communal aid and Buddhist compassion.

This souvenir ashtray was likely produced in the mid-20th century to celebrate this legacy, combining practical use with cultural symbolism. It comes housed in a traditional wooden box and includes a printed paper insert explaining the historical significance of the original temple cauldron.

Size: 12.5 x 12.5 x 8.5cm
