This vintage Japanese flower vase (hanaire, 花入) is crafted in the tradition of Shigaraki ware (信楽焼), one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns (Rokkoyō), renowned for its rustic character, natural clay textures, and expressive ceramic forms.

The vase features a tall, slender cylindrical silhouette with gently irregular contours and an asymmetrical opening, reflecting the Japanese appreciation for organic forms and understated beauty. Its upper surface is covered in a rich, glossy black glaze (黒釉, kokuyū), with subtle variations in tone and flowing patterns that contrast beautifully with the warm, earthy reddish-brown clay left exposed around the base.

This interplay between glossy glaze and unglazed stoneware highlights the natural qualities of Shigaraki pottery and embodies the aesthetic of wabi-sabi, celebrating simplicity, imperfection, and the beauty of handmade objects.

The piece bears the inscription 斉 (Sai), indicating the maker's name or signature. Traditionally used for Japanese floral arrangements (ikebana, 生け花), this vase is particularly suited to minimalist arrangements featuring a single seasonal branch or a few carefully selected flowers. Its sculptural presence also makes it a striking decorative object on its own.

A distinctive example of Japanese studio pottery, combining the rustic heritage of Shigaraki ceramics with a refined, contemporary-looking aesthetic.
