TB384 - Hanaire Vase Shigaraki-yaki 信楽焼

TB384 - Hanaire Vase Shigaraki-yaki 信楽焼

A beautiful vintage Shigaraki-yaki 信楽焼 hanaire 花入, a Japanese ceramic vase made in the rustic tradition of Shigaraki ware. The clay often contains small feldspar particles, giving the surface a rustic speckled appearance. Shigaraki ware is closely associated with the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, celebrating natural imperfection, simplicity, and the quiet beauty of handmade objects.

This vase has a tall cylindrical form with a narrow opening, making it ideal for displaying a single branch, seasonal flower, or simple ikebana arrangement. The surface is full of natural character, with warm earthy clay tones, subtle throwing lines, and an expressive glaze that flows down the body in soft white and grey drips. The upper section shows a rich amber-brown glaze, blending beautifully with the natural speckled clay beneath.

Shigaraki-yaki is one of Japan’s famous ancient kilns, known for its earthy texture, natural ash effects, and quiet rustic beauty. This piece reflects the spirit of wabi-sabi, appreciating natural imperfection, irregularity, and the beauty of handmade ceramic surfaces.
