TB373 - Hagi-yaki plates by Tenpōzan 天鵬山
A charming vintage set of small Hagi-yaki (萩焼) plates made by Tenpōzan (天鵬山). Each plate has a softly irregular, flower-like form with gently pinched edges, giving the set the warm and expressive character associated with handmade Japanese pottery.
The plates are covered in a delicate creamy glaze that transitions into pale blush pink and soft white tones. Subtle variations in the glaze, shape and surface make every piece slightly different. These natural differences are part of the beauty of Hagi ware and reflect the unpredictable interaction between clay, glaze and firing.
Originating in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Hagi-yaki has a long connection with the Japanese tea ceremony. It is traditionally appreciated for its soft earthy clay, understated glazing and tendency to develop an increasingly rich surface through continued use.
