TB305 - Hagi yaki Tea cup for Kintsugi 萩焼

TB305 - Hagi yaki Tea cup for Kintsugi 萩焼

Item for Kintsugi project. Vintage item, never used. This Hagi-yaki (萩焼) tea cup set beautifully reflects the quiet, earthy elegance for which Hagi ware has been cherished in Japanese tea culture for centuries. The pair features a soft flowing glaze transitioning from warm beige tones into a pale misty grey, creating a landscape-like effect reminiscent of distant mountains or drifting clouds.

Handcrafted from iron-rich clay, the cups embody the natural simplicity and warmth characteristic of traditional Hagi ceramics. Their gently flared forms sit comfortably in the hand, while the unglazed reddish foot reveals the raw clay beneath the glaze — a hallmark of authentic Hagi-yaki craftsmanship. Fine crazing (kannyū) visible across the glaze surface developed naturally through firing and age, adding depth and texture highly appreciated in Japanese tea aesthetics.

One cup remains in good vintage condition, while the second displays a prominent crack running from the rim toward the base, making this set especially suitable for a kintsugi project. The clean fracture line and softly toned glaze offer beautiful potential for restoration, where repaired seams could become part of the piece’s renewed story rather than something hidden.

Hagi ware has long been associated with the philosophy of wabi-sabi — the appreciation of imperfection, transience, and quiet beauty. In that spirit, this set carries not only the charm of traditional Japanese pottery, but also the possibility of transformation through the art of kintsugi.
