TB170 - Karatsu-yaki Enso Tea Cup 唐津焼

TB170 - Karatsu-yaki Enso Tea Cup 唐津焼

This Karatsu-yaki (唐津焼) tea cup features the timeless motif of Enso (円相)—a single, flowing circle symbolizing completeness, harmony, and the moment of enlightenment in Zen philosophy.

The cup is formed with a softly rounded profile and finished in a muted, ash-toned glaze characteristic of Karatsu ware. Across the surface, a pale lavender-gray enso brushstroke emerges gently from the natural glaze, its imperfect curve intentionally revealing the spontaneity and spirit of the potter’s hand. Iron-rich speckling and subtle variations in tone give the surface depth and warmth, hallmarks of traditional Karatsu aesthetics.

The foot is left partially unglazed, exposing the coarse, reddish-brown clay beneath—a tactile reminder of Karatsu’s earthy origins and wood-fired heritage. Over time and with use, the glaze is likely to develop further character, deepening the dialogue between tea, vessel, and user.

Quietly expressive and deeply meditative, this tea cup embodies the wabi-sabi spirit central to Karatsu ware, making it not only a functional object for daily tea but also a contemplative piece that rewards slow, mindful appreciation.
