TB144 - Matcha Bowl Chawan of Katō Tōzan 加藤藤山
Vintage item, never used. This Mino-yaki (美濃焼) matcha bowl is the work of Katō Tōzan(加藤藤山) of Tōzangama(藤山窯), a kiln known for its refined traditional ornamentation and precise overglaze techniques. The bowl features the auspicious Taba-noshi (束熨斗) motif, a classical decorative theme long associated with celebration, prosperity, and heartfelt good wishes. Historically used as a formal wrapping for gifts, the noshi motif symbolizes longevity, happiness, and the sharing of good fortune.
The design is richly rendered in vibrant overglaze enamels—deep blues, greens, reds, and gold—arranged in intricate geometric and floral patterns that flow gracefully around the bowl’s surface. Each ribbon-like segment of the taba-noshi is delicately bordered in gold, enhancing the sense of movement and ceremonial elegance. Gentle craquelure (貫入) in the glaze adds texture and warmth, giving the piece the soft, refined character admired in quality Mino ware.
The form is well-balanced and pleasant in hand, with a smooth interior suited for whisking matcha. The foot is neatly crafted, emphasizing the kiln’s attention to detail. Together, the harmonious shape and auspicious design make this bowl an ideal choice both for tea practice and as a display piece celebrating Japanese craftsmanship and tradition.
