TB121 - Ginkgo-Motif Small Plate Set by Suisen 赤津焼 翠泉
Vintage item, never used. This refined set of small ceramic plates represents the beauty and craftsmanship of 赤津焼(Akazu-yaki), one of the oldest pottery traditions in Japan. Produced in the Akazu district of Seto, Aichi Prefecture, Akazu-yaki is known for its long history—spanning over a thousand years—as well as its diverse glazing techniques, earthy textures, and deep connection to the heritage of Seto-yaki, one of the “Six Ancient Kilns of Japan” (日本六古窯). Akazu ware is especially admired for its mastery of traditional glazes (such as ash glaze, feldspar glaze, iron glaze, and Oribe-style green) and its harmonious balance of color and form.
Crafted by the ceramic artist 翠泉 (Suisen), this set beautifully embodies those qualities. Suisen’s work is known for its clean forms, expressive glazing, and the ability to blend tradition with a fresh modern sensibility. The artist’s signature can be found on the original wooden box, attesting to the authenticity of the set.
Each plate features a striking ginkgo leaf motif (銀杏文)—symbolizing longevity, resilience, and good fortune—rendered in a radiant yellow against a richly layered turquoise background. Gentle raised lines divide the surface into panels, giving the plates a subtle sculptural character. The glossy crackle glaze (貫入) adds further depth and warmth.
